Conrad and Claude Code are not competitors. Each fits a different kind of work and a different person. Claude Code is more flexible, but it needs a technically skilled analyst and shines on one-off tasks. Conrad wins where work repeats, numbers have to match the reports, and the person asking is a CFO who doesn’t write code.
“Why should I use AI in Symfio when I can load the exports into Claude Code and run the analysis myself?” Controllers have been asking us this more and more often in recent months. It’s a fair question and it deserves an honest answer.
If we claimed Conrad can do everything Claude Code can, the first technically skilled controller would prove us wrong. And they’d be right. So we compared both approaches point by point, including the areas where Claude Code comes out ahead.
Conrad and Claude Code run on the same class of language models, so they don’t differ in intelligence. They differ in the data they work with and in who works with them.
Claude Code is a general-purpose tool for someone comfortable with the terminal, files and Python. It takes exports, writes code around them and produces an analysis, a model or a presentation. Consolidation, exchange rates and correct calculations, however, remain the responsibility of whoever runs it.
Conrad is an AI controller built directly into Symfio. It works on the group’s finished consolidation, uses the same metrics as your financial statements, and follows the permissions set in Symfio. A CFO asks in plain language in the browser and gets an answer based on numbers that match the bank report.
Conrad wins wherever data, accuracy and teamwork matter. Claude Code wins on flexibility, outputs and speed for one-off work.
| Area | Conrad in Symfio | Claude Code (without Symfio) | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data connection | 20+ ready-made connectors to accounting systems, data syncs continuously | Excel or CSV exports, or a custom connector you have to maintain | Conrad |
| Group consolidation | Ready model: entities, currencies, exchange rates, intercompany transactions, mapping | Rebuilt for every task; for the same result each month you need to build your own model | Conrad |
| Numbers matching reports | Answers rely on the same metrics as the financial statements | The model generates the calculation, it can differ from run to run and needs checking | Conrad |
| Who uses it | CFO or controller, in plain language, in the browser | Someone who can handle the terminal, files and Python | Conrad |
| Permissions and security | Respects entity access rights, roles and two-factor authentication; data never leaves the system as files | Whoever has the export has everything; files stay on laptops | Conrad |
| Data changes | Proposes a mapping or plan change, carries it out once approved, the change is traceable | Edits files; approval only if you build it yourself | Conrad |
| Shared team memory | Company-level rules and facts that apply to the whole team | Memory and settings are separate for each user | Conrad |
| Recurring work | Monthly close for ten entities, instantly and the same way every month | Every month again: export, check, fix | Conrad |
| Analytical flexibility | Works with what is in Symfio | Anything: combines finance with CRM, HR or web data, custom models and scenarios | Claude Code |
| Outputs | Chat text for now, charts coming soon | Excel, presentations, PDF, charts and complete reports | Claude Code |
| Automation | Answers questions today, scheduled checks coming soon | Can be scheduled to run regularly, for example every morning | Claude Code |
| One-off analysis | The company first has to be connected to Symfio (days to weeks) | Excel on disk and the analysis is done in ten minutes | Claude Code |
| AI models | Top language models that Symfio keeps up to date | The latest Claude models and new features first | Tie |
| Price | Included in the Symfio subscription | The licence is cheap, analyst time and maintenance are expensive | Depends on volume, Conrad for groups |
Wherever work repeats and the numbers have to match what goes to the bank or the board. Four typical situations from practice:
Monthly group close. “Why don’t our intercompany balances net to zero?” Conrad sees all entities, exchange rates and mappings at once and finds the account causing the difference. In Claude Code, this would first mean ten exports and matching them by hand.
A CFO without an analyst. “Please summarise the group’s September P&L against the plan.” Conrad answers from numbers that match the bank report. Nobody has to check whether the model added something up differently this time.
A team with one set of rules. A controller sets a rule, for example “always count account 563 as foreign exchange losses”, and Conrad applies it for everyone on the team. In Claude Code, everyone keeps their own rules on their own computer.
Data corrections with approval. Conrad proposes a mapping correction, the administrator approves it and Conrad carries it out. The change is logged, so the auditor always knows who changed what and when.
If your team has an analyst comfortable with the terminal and Python, Claude Code is the better choice for some tasks:
We are working on the last two in Conrad right now. Until then, Claude Code is ahead here.
AI is only as good as the data underneath it. Conrad isn’t smarter than Claude. What Claude Code lacks today isn’t intelligence, it’s finished, consolidated and verified data.
That’s why Symfio also offers an MCP server. Claude Code, Claude or any other AI tool that supports MCP connects through it directly to the same data source that Conrad and your reports rely on. Analysts can build their own models and presentations, on numbers that match and with the same permissions.
Conrad for the CFO, MCP for analysts. Both on the same numbers.
If you need a one-off analysis and have an analyst who knows Python, go with Claude Code. If you run a group’s finances, close the books every month and need numbers that match the bank report, that’s a job for Conrad. And if you want both, connect Claude Code to Symfio via MCP.
