One filter for the whole app. We have started

At Symfio we are working hard to have a single company selector in the app – instead of today’s filters scattered across sections. Plans, Cash flow forecast and Companies have already been switched to the unified selection. We will add the rest of the app step by step. It is the first visible step of a larger design initiative.

Why we are tackling this

As Symfio grew over the years, sections were added and each brought its own logic for selecting a company. The result: you selected one company in reporting, switched to planning and had to select it again. In some places the filter stayed, elsewhere it reset. And when you needed to change something across the group, you went through it company by company.

A small thing, but it hurts more the more entities you have. Symfio customers usually have dozens.

What has already been switched

You’ll now find a single global company selector at the bottom of the left menu. The selected company is the context for all sections that have already been switched:

  • Plans – planning in the context of the selected company
  • Cash flow forecast – cash flow prediction
  • Companies – company detail, Data Sources, Management data, users, settings

The new unified company selector at the bottom of the left menu. The selected company sets the context for all switched sections.

What’s behind it

A unified selector isn’t cosmetic. It is the foundation that opens up three things we are building on in our design:

  • One mental model across the app. You select the company once. Everything else adapts. The context moves with you, whether you work on a plan, a report or data sources.
  • Group-level edits. Among other things, the ability to change charts of accounts centrally, not company by company. For holdings with dozens of entities, that saves hours of work every month.
  • Bulk edit of practically everything. We will gradually make bulk edits available – account mapping, categorisation, report settings, consolidation parameters – at the level of the selection, not a single entity.

What’s next

The remaining sections are being switched step by step. Priority goes to areas with the biggest impact on daily work – typically reporting and categorisation. We will announce each further milestone in this newsletter.

During the transition period, you’ll see the original filter in some sections and the new selector in others. We are prepared for that, we keep things backward compatible, and nobody loses any data or settings.

Tell us what you are missing

The unified filter is a design decision that affects the daily work of every Symfio user. If you can think of a scenario the new workflow should handle differently, or you have a specific use case you want to discuss, get in touch. We are building this strategic initiative together with customers. Send us your feedback at support@symfio.app
